Interior design Utrecht townhouse: designed floor by floor in 3D before building began

In 2019, Choc Studio completed the interior design for a new-build townhouse in Utrecht, as part of a full design-and-realisation process. Five floors, from basement to attic, were worked out in full 3D before any decision was finalised, giving Nathalie and Dimitri a clear picture of every room well before completion.

The brief: how do you give five floors a coherent interior without losing character on any level?

Nathalie and Dimitri discovered Choc Studio through a feature in Stijlvol Wonen. The modern chic style with warmth appealed to them straight away. Their question was more concrete than just style: how do you give five floors character and coherence, from the family kitchen in the basement to the children’s rooms in the attic? The townhouse was in the centre of Utrecht, brand new, and needed an interior that felt right on every floor.

The approach: one complete plan, fully developed in 3D before a single purchase was made

All five floors were fully developed in 3D before anything was purchased or installed. This gave the clients a realistic picture of proportions, materials and atmosphere early in the process. Each floor has its own character while remaining a logical part of the whole.

Robbert and Julia deliberately layered the design. Lighting by Nemo, Moooi and Contardi sets the rhythm throughout the house. Wallpaper by Arte and Élitis defines the atmosphere floor by floor. Bespoke furniture, designed by Choc Studio and made by Oostergracht, made layouts possible that standard pieces simply can’t. Sofas and chairs by Meridiani and Marac, rugs by Carpetlinq and Van Besouw, and upholstery by Zinc Textile and Villa Nova form the foundation. Nathalie and Dimitri were sometimes nudged towards bolder choices than they’d have made on their own. The statement lighting and striking wallpaper are the proof.

The result: five floors with a distinct character on each level, published in Stijlvol Wonen

The townhouse has its own atmosphere on all five floors while holding together as one home. Every material, every bespoke detail and every light fitting was part of a plan that was clear before construction began. The project was also published in Stijlvol Wonen.

Nathalie and Dimitri: “We were sometimes nudged to make a bolder choice than we would have ourselves. It turned out even better than we’d dreamed, in a wonderfully relaxed way.”
