New build interior design Bloemendaal
In 2020, Choc Studio completed the interior design and full fit-out of a new-build villa at the Carré in Bloemendaal. The villa had an exceptional ceiling height of 3.2 metres. That height was the house’s strongest feature, but it also posed a question: how do you make the most of that scale without a family home feeling cold or remote? That was the central design challenge.
The question
The owners wanted the height of the rooms to be felt. At the same time, this was a family home, meant to be lived in. They had a strong preference for light colours and light materials throughout. That brought a second consideration: how do you keep a light interior practical with young children in the house? The choices had to work on the day of completion and still work five years later.
The approach
The 3.2-metre ceiling height became the starting point for every design decision. Two bespoke elements give the most direct expression to it. The TV unit, produced by Oostergracht, runs floor to ceiling in oak veneer with a light mother-of-pearl finish. It also incorporates the steel door between the hallway and the living room, functioning as an architectural bridge that gives the transition between spaces real presence. Beyond the TV, the unit provides storage that disappears into the height.
The kitchen by Cesar Cucine works on the same principle. Tall black oak cabinets run to ceiling height, reinforcing the vertical line throughout the space. The island includes a bar with Meridiani bar stools, which makes the kitchen work as a gathering point as well as a cooking space.
The colour palette was built around the owners’ preference for light tones, with enough depth to hold the space. Fabrics from Villa Nova, Zinc and Aristide add texture to the pale base. Lighting from Nemo Lighting, Tom Dixon and Contardi was layered across multiple levels to give the high rooms warmth and definition. Height reads as richness rather than emptiness.
Seating is by Meridiani and Marac. In the areas that see the most daily use, materials and fabrics were chosen for their durability under family conditions, without that being visible in the design.
The result
The villa now has the scale its architecture always suggested. The high rooms feel warm, the light palette has been preserved and the house works as a family home. For this project, Choc Studio developed several fully detailed 3D design proposals, so the owners could see the spaces before anything was ordered or installed.
