Interior restyling Haarlem
In 2016, Choc Studio completed the restyling of a city home in Haarlem. The living and dining area had no real character, not because of bad choices, but because there was no coherence or direction. The owners could feel something was missing but couldn’t say what. Choc Studio replaced all the furniture, refinished the floor and made two design decisions that set the tone for the whole interior.
The question
The owners wanted a home that felt more like them. The living room and dining kitchen were flat: no tension, no sense of direction. They knew what was missing but not how to get there. The kitchen worked. Everything else was open for change.
The approach
Choc Studio started with the foundations: the floor was sanded back and recoloured, all walls repainted in considered tones from Little Greene. Curtains and blinds were made to measure. The aim was a calm, cohesive base that could carry the bolder choices to come.
Those bolder choices came in two elements. A black oak ensuite with steel doors divides the living and dining space while keeping the two connected. It gives the room structure without making it feel smaller. On one wall, gold wallpaper by Arte acts as an anchor for the entire colour palette, not only for decoration, but a deliberate reference point.
All furniture was replaced. Seating from Meridiani and Pilat & Pilat, tables and storage from Arco, accessories and cushions from Pure Choc. Lighting from Moooi, Lee Broom, Modular and Nautiek adds the layering the design calls for. The kitchen was left as it was.
The result
The city home now has character without losing its ease of use. The floor, walls, furniture and two central interventions work as one whole. What was flat before now has direction.
