Interior designer cost: it’s one of the most searched topics in home design, and one of the least clearly answered. You’ll find hourly rates, day rates, percentages of the build cost and package deals that barely compare to each other. That’s not because anyone’s hiding anything. It’s because no two interior projects are the same. At Choc Studio we work with a fixed quote per level of involvement, agreed after an introductory meeting. You know exactly where you stand before anything starts. This blog walks through what each level includes, what shapes the price, and when the investment pays for itself.

Interior designer cost: what’s included, and what determines the total?

The question of what an interior designer costs can only be answered once it’s clear what role the designer is actually playing. A complete interior scheme for a new build, with a lighting plan, materials schedule and 3D visualisations for every room, is a different brief from a single consultation about a living room. The price follows the scope and complexity of the project, not an off-the-shelf rate.

Choc Studio always works with a fixed price per level of involvement, agreed before anything begins. No open-ended fees, no recalculating hours afterwards. So what actually shapes that price?

What determines the scope of the project?

Every project at Choc Studio moves through three phases: design, preparation and realisation, always in that order. The design determines what gets prepared. The preparation determines what gets built. Reverse that sequence and you’re making decisions without a foundation.

In the design phase we put together the complete interior plan: floor plans, 3D visualisations, a lighting plan and a colour and materials proposal. You see exactly how each room will look before anything is ordered or built.
In the preparation phase we brief and coordinate all the parties involved: contractors, installers, kitchen and bathroom suppliers, floor layers and interior builders. We keep everything aligned and stay available for every question and decision that comes up during the build.

In the realisation phase we take care of the furnishing: furniture, lighting, soft furnishings and accessories, from logistics and storage through to placement and styling. How much Choc Studio handles in each phase is agreed in the quote after the introductory meeting.

What’s the scope of your project?

Designing a single living room takes far less time than putting together a complete scheme for a new build. The same applies to a full renovation compared with a restyling project. Scope, complexity and the number of parties involved all shape what goes into the quote.

How is the price put together?

After the introductory meeting we draw up a quote that fits your situation and the level of support you need. That quote covers our fees for the agreed work. Costs for contractors, suppliers and furnishings come on top of that, and depend on your choices and the market.

If the brief changes during the project, say an architect introduces technical revisions that mean drawings need redoing, or you decide to add another room to the scope, we draw up a supplementary quote for that. The fixed price covers the agreed work. Anything beyond that means a new conversation and a new quote.

When does an interior designer pay for themselves?

Almost always. That sounds like something a designer would say, but it isn’t. Deciding without a plan has a cost, it just arrives later. A wall that can no longer be moved. A light fitting positioned too close to the window, so the curtain track won’t fit alongside it. A newly bought corner sofa that turns out far too big, or too small, for the room. There’s always a workaround, but workarounds are visible, and they cost extra time and cause real frustration. A good plan prevents that kind of mistake, and that’s worth many times more than the plan itself.

We’ve been guiding interior projects from concept to completion since 2007, first from Haarlem and now from our studio in Bennebroek. Over the years we’ve seen what deciding with a plan delivers, and what deciding without one costs.

What will your project cost?

That’s something we can only answer after a first conversation. Based on your situation, your wishes and the level of support you need, we’ll put together a quote with a clear breakdown. No open-ended fees, no surprises further down the line.
