New build villa interior design near Utrecht

In 2019, Choc Studio completed the interior design of a new-build villa on the Vecht river in Maarssen, near Utrecht. The architect’s plans were already in place, but Choc Studio came on board before building started. This made it possible to review the floor plan before any walls went up, and to keep the full process, from design through to furnishing, in one hand.

The question

The owners wanted a home of real quality that didn’t hold you at a distance. High standards in materials and finish, but also a place that invites people in, for children, family and friends. That balance was the starting point for the design.

The approach

Coming in before construction began, Choc Studio could assess the architectural drawings critically and make adjustments to the floor plan before anything was built.

For the finishes, Choc Studio and the owners travelled to Italy together to select the marble. It was applied throughout the project: in the kitchen, the two bathrooms, all the cloakrooms, the swimming pool and the poolhouse. The decision to source it in person reflects what this project required. Marble varies significantly from slab to slab, and by seeing pieces together can you judge whether they’ll work as a coherent whole across an entire house.

The kitchen and the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom are the rooms that define this project. The distinctive marble and custom joinery set the tone in both.

Inside and outside were considered together. The garden includes a poolhouse, a swimming pool and a jetty onto the Vecht. The poolhouse interior was designed as a continuation of the house, so the transition between the two reads as deliberate.

The result

The villa reads as a coherent whole across all its rooms. Furniture by Meridiani, Marac, Nilson Beds, Prades and the studio’s own Pure Choc line. Rugs by Carpetlinq and Limited Edition, wall coverings by Arte and Thibaut. Fabrics from Casamance, Equipo DRT, Anthology, Kirkby Design and Zinc. Lighting by Nemo, Moooi, Stout Verlichting, Delta Light and Fambuena. Marble supplied and crafted by Grillo Natuursteen. The Cesar Cucine kitchen was realised with Dutch Kitchen Design. Custom cabinetry by Oostergracht. Garden design by Vosselman Buiten.
