Interior design villa extension Santpoort-Zuid: from an unworkable plan to an extension with kitchen and office

In 2020, Choc Studio completed the interior design for the extension of a villa in Santpoort-Zuid. The residents, acquaintances of Choc Studio, had been considering an extension for some time, but couldn’t settle on a plan themselves. Robbert Maarsen sat down with them and was direct about it: what they had in mind simply wasn’t workable. Choc Studio drew up a new plan, and that became the starting point for the project. The extension was given two clear functions: a larger kitchen and a home office, since working from home had become a real problem in the existing layout.

The brief: how do you create a workable extension plan for a villa?

The residents had already considered several plans for an extension, but none of them turned out to be workable. Robbert made that clear in conversation and proposed drawing up a thorough plan for the floor layout instead. That plan was built around two extensions: one for the kitchen and one for the office, so that working from home would finally have a proper place.

The approach: a fully visualised 3D plan for an extension with kitchen and office, connected with bronze steel doors

Choc Studio visualised the entire plan in 3D, so the residents could see exactly what would be built and how the new layout would work. That clarity gave them the confidence to go ahead with the plan.

To connect the existing villa with the new extension, Choc Studio designed bronze-toned steel doors. These doors separate the hallway from the living and dining room, and besides this practical role, they also have a visual one: the glass in the doors creates a sense of space, while the bronze brings warmth to the transition between the old and new parts of the house.

The result: an extension with kitchen and office, plus a renewed living and dining room

Once the extension was built, Choc Studio had the floor in the living and dining room replaced with oak herringbone flooring, and both rooms were refurnished. The new kitchen is by Cesar Cucine, with a striking Glamora wallcovering on the back wall: a bold choice the residents were immediately enthusiastic about. For the office, Choc Studio designed custom furniture. The interior of the extension and ground floor also features pieces by Marac, Prades and Pure Choc, with fabrics by Kirkby Design and Silvera. A bioethanol fireplace by Planika Fires adds warmth to the extension, and lighting by Tom Dixon, Nemo and Contardi completes the space.
